“From what we get, we can make a living; what we give, however, makes a life.” – Arthur Ashe
At JHE, giving back to both its internal and external family continues to be the essence of its success. In 2011, the family rallied together to develop Golfing 4 Good, a JHE-funded golf tournament that benefits members of the JHE family and local community who are dealing with adversity in their life.
Since its inception, the tournament has provided funds to cover medical costs for an employee’s girlfriend suffering from stage 2 Hodgkin’s Lymphoma (2011); making a home wheelchair-accessible for an employee’s father who survived a critical all-terrain vehicle accident (2012); and to cover medical costs for an employee’s mother-in-law suffering from stage 4 breast and bone cancer. Through its efforts, JHE has raised a total of more than $90,000 for the Golfing 4 Good recipients.
This year, the tournament will benefit the Lymphedema Advocacy Group. The organization was founded by JHE employee Brian Ferguson’s wife, Heather, after their son Dylan was born with idiopathic congenital primary bilateral lower body lymphedema. Lymphedema is an incurable but treatable medical condition caused by injury, trauma or congenital defects in the lymphatic system. The most common cause of lymphedema is cancer treatments that remove or damage lymph nodes, making it one of the most significant survivorship issues. The chronic and potentially debilitating condition causes severe swelling generally in the arms or legs and can result in infection, disfigurement, disability or even death if left untreated.
Lymphedema Advocacy Group’s mission is to advance lymphedema care in the United States by advocating for improved insurance coverage for the diagnosis and treatment. The all-volunteer organization works to increase awareness of and education about lymphedema among law makers, insurance providers and other relevant entities; supports attempts to improve health care coverage at both the state and federal levels; and encourages all members of the lymphedema community to become active participants in this process.
